Ensemble nu:n

"Radices Musicae" – Improvisation on liturgical music of the Middle Ages

 Gert Anklam (Germany) – saxophones
Falk Zenker (Germany) – guitar, live electronics
 Rebecca Bain (Canada) – voice
 Katherine Hill (Cananda) – voice

Inspired by the timeless beauty and spiritual power of Gregorian chant and Romanesque and Gothic polyphony, these four musicians founded their ensemble with the purpose of combining early vocal music with modern improvisation and experimental sound.
The surviving written music of Western Europe goes back to the 8th century and is to a large extent made up of liturgical music. Ensemble nun. researches this medieval repertoire (up to the 14th century), and using it as their starting point, performs in the here and now, in the singular moment of improvisation.
The two Canadian singers Rebecca Bain and Katherine Hill, internationally renowned interpreters of early music, bring early liturgical song to life according to its original sources. The Berlin saxophonist Gert Anklam and the Weimar guitarist Falk Zenker pick up from there; using their modern instruments but with careful consideration of medieval melody, harmony and composition principles, they improvise on the historical material, relying on their long experience with jazz, experimental and world music. The synthesis of voices, saxophones, e-guitar, and live electronics with its resulting blend of archaic and modern sounds, along with the back and forth between old and new melodies, the uniting of medieval and contemporary improvisation techniques, and the play between the natural acoustics of the hall and electronic duplication via live sampling, all make for a particularly exciting performance.

One of the special qualities of ensemble nun is its use of a concert venue’sentire space, bringing to life its full acoustic range. The singers and saxophonist move at times around and amongst the audience, while the guitar sends its sound around the entire room via loud-speakers, in a fusing of sound as “transient space” and architecture as “frozen sound”. This can be equally compelling in a Romanesque or Gothic church, the contemporary architecture of a modern church, a former industrial hall or factory, or any other appropriate concert venue, as long as it has a church-like acoustic.
As with much early art, liturgical music of the Middle Ages was composed with spiritual motivation. Today, art has become more often a method of personal self-expression. Ensemble nun inhabits a special place somewhere between the medieval roots of their culture, and the very different modern attitude towards spirituality and the individual.
Their chosen mentor for this project is the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart (1260-1328, active and renowned in Erfurt, Cologne, Strasbourg and Paris), whose visionary world view and picturesque language haven’t lost any of their power and fascination to this day. Eckhart’s use of the term “nun” (pronounced like the english word noon, and meaning now) speaks to the musicians of this ensemble; nun is the state in which past and present, individual being and the cosmos, merge together, the state which they strive to achieve in the moment of making music together.

„Radices Musicae“ – Improvisation on liturgical music of the Middle Ages  (doc, 32 kb)
„A fabulous medieval creature from sandstone comes to life, snarls, and whips its tail dangerously. The creature softens as sweet singing is heard. Rather than a fabulous creature, the saxophonist Gert Anklam appears on stage. The musical presentation is supported by guitarist Falk Zenker, who moments later enters into dialogue with the sax and singers Rebecca Bain and Katherine Hill. Musical worlds, separated by centuries, come together.“
Helga Heilig, Naumburger Tagblatt, 07.11.03

„`Nun´ (the now) is timeless; in other words, time becomes transcendental, at once beyond time and time abundant… (ensemble nu;n’s) music actually `grasps´ this `now´. In connecting the `old´ with the `new´, it explores the boundaries of time and brings them closer together.“ Sister Hannah, St. Erentraud/ Berg

„It was deeply moving music, filled with longing, intelligent but light-hearted, sprinkled with humour, and the audience enjoyed it thoroughly. Transfixed and transported to another world, at times it felt as though one was floating...“ G. Meyer, OTZ, 10.11.03

„The concert was delightfully made up of continuous live experiments, bringing together ancient ritual music and modern performance practice.“ Thüringer Allgemeine, 02.08.05

„Sound coming from all corners, it almost seems as if the old walls are vibrating…past and present unite in the moment… The applause is never ending. “Wonderful” is whispered through the audience. The musicians must bow repeatedly: another moment in the here and now…“ Freies Wort, 01.08.05

„This is an interesting recording... the taste shown in its realisation.“
J. C. Asensio, Goldbergmagazin 1/07, 4 from 5 stars for CD „Salutare“/ Raumklang
